Rick Abbott made his league debut against Sturt in the 1965 first semi-final, on the Adelaide Oval and in the same year was named the Norwood reserves best first year player.

Abbott had the ability to dominate across half forward with high-marking and quick handballing.

In 1966 he was joined at the Parade by fellow University (Amateurs)team mate Bill Chapman.

Abbott played 14 league games in 1966 as a centre half forward/centreman. He was best on ground in Norwood's 75 point drubbing of Port Adelaide in the 1966 reserves grand final.  Playing as a key forward, Abbott provided a direct route to goal and kicked five majors.

He then took time off to study medicine, and did not play for the Redlegs in the next three seasons.

In 1970 Abbott attempted a comeback and was named in the squad to play Footscray in a pre-season trial on the Norwood Oval
