Joe Ahmat was recruited from the Darwin Football Club. He had been recommended to Norwood by former Redlegs stalwart Michael Poulter, who was coaching Ahmat in Darwin at the time. Wally Miller, Norwood's football director, had then seen a bare-footed Ahmat win a long kicking competition.

In 1980, Ahmat played in Norwood's Under 17 team and was a member of the Under 19 premiership team. During the season he also won All-Australian selection, representing the Northern Territory Football League in the Teal Cup. He continued playing in the U/19's, before gaining promotion to the Reserves during 1982.

A dangerous forward, Ahmat made an outstanding league debut for the Redlegs. He kicked five goals against Glenelg in the 1983 Anzac Day clash at Football Park. Norwood easily won the encounter 29.14 to 12.12.

Ahmat added another five senior games for Norwood that season, but the following year he joined Swan Districts in the Western Australian Football League. He played in a premiership in his first year in the WAFL, and went on to play 55 games with Swan Districts, and 34 with Claremont.
