David Bland joined St. Kilda in the VFL from Hampton Rovers Football Club in the Victorian Amateur Football Association.

His time at St. Kilda was not without incident. In 1953 he was reported in two separate games and suspended for a total of 12 weeks. After playing 36 games between 1951 and 1955 he transferred to South Adelaide in the SANFL.

In 1956 he was selected to represent South Australia after only playing three games for his club. A  classy ruckman, he was severely restricted by injury and only managed  12 games with South from 1956 to 1957.

Bland first trained with Norwood in 1959, after a disagreement with South over the payment of an account for a cartilage operation. It was to be 1962 before he represented the Redlegs, and subsequently only managed two League games and a handful of Reserve appearances.
