A tall, key position player, Stuart Bown played predominantly at centre half forward, centre half back and ruck. By the time he was recruited by Norwood from the West Broken Hill Football Club he had already made his A Grade debut as a 15 year old and played 49 games for the Broken Hill club. Broken Hill was then in the Norwood zone and former Redleg Matthew Kelly, the then Technical and Development Officer, enticed him to move to Adelaide.

In 1997 Bown played in a premiership side for Norwood's Under 19's, as well as being named their Best and Fairest. In the  Reserves the following season he performed the double once again, playing in a  premiership and winning the Best & Fairest award.

Bown made his League debut for the Redlegs on the same day as his good mate Matthew Dawes, versus Central District on the Elizabeth Oval. Unfortunately a broken leg against Glenelg soon after ruled him out for the rest of the season.

He joined the Adelaide Crows as a Rookie in the 1999 season and was elevated to the senior list in 2000. Making his AFL debut against Hawthorn that season, he played another three games before being de-listed at the end of the year.

Initially retiring at the end of the 2008 season, he resumed his SANFL career in 2010 and was a member of the side that narrowly lost a tense Grand Final to Central District. His last game for the Redlegs, his 200th, was in the 2011 Preliminary Final loss to Woodville-West Torrens.
