Born in Scotland, Gil Butchart was recruited from West Gambier by then Norwood League coach, Haydn Bunton.

A rugged, close checking defender, he was a team orientated player who played most of his football at half back, but also filled the centre half forward position later in his career.

Noted for his courageous high flying marks rather than for his kicking, Butchart won Norwood's 1969 Best & Fairest award.

One of the first players selected in the League side, Butchart quickly reached the 100 game mark in 1971 and played his 150th in 1973.

He retired from League football early in 1974 due to work commitments, and continued his career with the Athelstone Football Club.
