Gordon Couch was an excellent junior, and was named Norwood's best all round player in the Senior Colts of 1950 and 1951.

Although illness and injury delayed his progress to the senior side, Couch made his League debut against South Adelaide in Round 10, 1952 with Norwood winning the game 8.9 to 8.8.

A well-built defender, a safe mark and good kick, he played most of his early football at half-back.

Couch missed all of the 1955 SANFL season, but won a Mail Medal while playing and working in the country.

In 1957, Couch represented South Australia Reserves against Victoria on the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

He was moved to full back half way through the 1958 season when he had his best year with the Redlegs, and was awarded a Players' Five Year Certificate.

Appointed captain of Norwood Reserves for the 1960 season, he led Norwood to its first Reserves flag in 21 years. Named at full back, he was high in Norwood's best players in its Grand Final win over Port Adelaide.
