Kevin Cousins was educated at Rostrevor College and impressed as a junior. He won the school's Under 15 best and fairest award in 1950, and in the following season progressed to the First 18.

After leaving college he returned home to Booborowie and in 1952 played in the North Eastern Football League. Cousins then had a stint with South Adelaide, before re-joining Booborowie.

A good mark and kick, the competitive mid-fielder won back-to-back Mail Medals in 1957 and 1958.

Cousins joined Norwood in 1959 and made his League debut in the opening round of the year, starting on the bench against North Adelaide. He played 16 games in his first season and was named "best half-forward".

He was named in a 21 man squad for the 1960 Grand Final against North Adelaide but was the unlucky player to miss out when the final line-up was announced. Cousins made 10 League appearances for the year.

In 1961 he played in the Norwood Reserves Grand Final victory over West Torrens. Selected on a wing, Cousins was high in the Redlegs best players. The following week he was named on the bench in the League Grand Final clash against West Adelaide.

The wingman/half-forward played 14 League games in his third and final season and was the recipient of the "services rendered" award in 1960 and 1961.

In 1964 he won another Mail Medal playing for Booborowie in the NEFL.
