Matthew Dawes played his early football with Edithburgh, and then the Southern Eagles, in the Yorke Peninsula.

Educated at Rostrevor College from the age of 15, Dawes won premierships with Norwood's Under 19's in 1997 and with the Reserves the following season.

He made his League debut in round four, 1999 - Norwood beating Central Districts at Elizabeth, 15.10 to 12.6.

Noted as a courageous defender, he was awarded the Norwood Football Club "Competitor of the Year" trophy in 1999, 2000 and 2002.
 
In 2001 he was selected in the Advertiser Team of the Year, and won the club's Jim Tummel Outstanding Qualities Award.
 
Matthew was the club's vice-captain in 2004 and 2005.
 
After retiring from League footy, he won the best & fairest award playing for the Angaston Football Club in 2009.

Dawes was runner-up in the association and club best & fairest, playing for Rostrevor Old Collegians Football Club, in 2011.

In 2013 he also played in Rostrevor Old Collegians' inaugural Amateur League Division 1 premiership.

Dawes' great uncles, John and James, played League football for South Adelaide.
