Ron Dickson was educated at Norwood High School and played for Norwood's Senior Colts in 1954, when he was adjudged the team's best user of the ball. The following year he captained the Senior Colts.

A courageous rover, he did his best work in close, and in 1956 was named the Best Junior in Norwood's Reserves. He played five League games for the year, after making his debut early in the season. Dickson was a member of the Norwood team that won the 1956 Advertiser Cup (night competition) and then played as a half forward in the Redlegs' win against Carlton the following week.

In his time at Norwood, Dickson had to compete against the likes of Haydn Bunton, Bob Fosdike, Peter Minervini and Peter Vivian for a regular roving berth. However in 1957, he was named the club's best rover. He played in Norwood's losing Grand Final side that season, but was injured early in the game, and was replaced in the second quarter.

In 1958, he travelled with the League team that played a mid-season match against a combined Whyalla team.

A science student, Dickson attended Adelaide University, and in 1961 played state football for the Amateur League against Victoria.
