A ready-made footballer, Ross Dillon was recruited by Norwood from the Melbourne Football Club in 1973, after a transfer in employment. Originally from Kyabram, he had begun his VFL career with Melbourne in 1966.

Playing as a centre half forward/full forward, he played 85 games for the Demons, winning their goal-kicking award in 1969 and 1970, and representing Victoria in those two seasons.

Despite wearing contact lenses, he was a superb overhead mark possessing great judgement.

Dillon had an outstanding season in Norwood's premiership drought breaking year of 1975. Not only did he win Norwood's Best and Fairest and lead the club's goal-kicking, but he also represented South Australia in the interstate match against his old state.

Renowned as a ball player, Dillon played his 100th game for the club in 1977.

In 1978 and 1979 he was appointed Reserves playing coach and guided the team to the 1978 Reserves premiership.

A fine cricketer, Dillon played A grade for the Melbourne and Kensington cricket clubs.
