Originally from Owen on the northern Adelaide plains, John Durbridge was a lightly-framed, pacy wingman/rover.

In 1951, after impressing in the reserves, Durbridge was named on a half-forward flank in his league debut against Sturt. He kicked a goal and the Redlegs ran out winners, 15.13 to 7.10. Durbridge then played in a losing side the following week against West Adelaide on the Norwood Oval. Selected as a rover, changing out of a forward pocket, he was replaced at three quarter time due to a bruised elbow.

He played his final game of league football for Norwood in the last minor round of the 1951 season. Named on a wing, he was again part of a Norwood victory against Sturt.

He capped off a fine season by being recognised as the reserves most improved junior.

Durbridge continued to play in the reserves, and in 1953 was named best rover
