Deadly goalsneak Billy Dedman was aged around twenty-five but already had a substantial football career behind him in Melbourne, and then with South Adelaide in the inaugural year of the SAFA competition in 1877, before joining Norwood. While at Carlton he was described as ‘active, quick, and straight and puzzling’ by The Footballer in 1874, kicked 13 of the Blues’ 36 goals for the season in 1875, and did even better to finish with 18 goals in 1876 to lead the Victorian goalkicking. In 1877 with South Adelaide he proved to be an exciting player, a strong mark and grand kick, as a forward, wing and half-back as well as kicking 10 goals for the premier team. Adept at kicking with either foot he could use a full range of kicks (place, drop and punt) to goal from any angle up to a distance of sixty yards.  Dedman came to Norwood in controversial circumstances from South Adelaide and played in 10 games for the season.
