David French came from Springton in the Adelaide Hills and graduated to the Norwood league team from the Thirds. A former prince Alfred College student, he was selected for the 1963 State Under 19 side to play Victoria's Under 19's but unfortunately missed the match because of an injury.

Strong and courageous, French was a dashing and unselfish rover who made his League debut in the opening round of the 1964 season, against Port Adelaide at the Parade; the Redlegs winning a thriller, 15.9 to 13.19. Coincidentally, his last match of League football was also against the arch-rivals, on the Norwood Oval. Norwood triumphed again, 11.13 to 7.17.

French was named Most Consistent for the Reserves in 1965 and 1966, and was high in Norwood's best players in the Reserves 1966 Grand Final win over Port Adelaide.

David's brother Robert also played League football for Norwood from 1969 to 1974
