After leaving Sacred Heart College in 1983, Martin Gallagher played the next two seasons with Adelaide University in the Amateur League.

He then played 19 games for Norwood's Under 19's in 1986. Norwood beat West Torrens in the Grand Final and Gallagher was runner-up in the Best and Fairest award. The following season he played regularly for the Reserves.

In 1988 he had a year with Sacred Heart Old Collegians (Amateurs), coached by his brother Phil Gallagher.

Back at the Parade, the tall wingman made his senior debut against Central District at Angaston in the 1989 Foundation Cup (pre-season series). Norwood won the match 10.8 to 8.10. His following game was also a Foundation Cup match - Norwood defeating Sturt by five points at Football Park.

Starved of opportunities in the strong Norwood League team of the time, Gallagher played his last game of League football against North Adelaide in round 8, 1989.

Martin's father Kevin "Sam" (1945-55, 131 games) together with older brothers Phil (1973-86, 292 games) and
John Gallagher (1981-83, 10 games) also represented the Norwood Football Club.
