The classy John Georgiou attended Mentone Grammar in Melbourne and later moved to St Bedes College. He was recruited from the Parkmore Football Club (Victoria) by St. Kilda and made his senior AFL debut as a 16 year old in 1992. He was most impressive in the seven games he played in his debut season.

Injury intervened however, and Georgiou only played another nine AFL games over the next three years.

Delisted by St. Kilda, he transferred to Norwood for the 1996 season. A skilful onballer/half forward flanker with quick hands, Georgiou had a solid season, playing  23 games and making the Advertiser Team of the Year. Under new Norwood coach Peter Rohde, Georgiou's last SANFL appearance was in Norwood's narrow loss to Port Adelaide, in the 1996 preliminary final.

Georgiou decided to return to Victoria in 1997 and continued his career with Frankston in the VFL.

In 1999 he won the JJ Liston trophy as the best and fairest player in the Victorian Football League.

After injuries had brought his playing career to a premature end, Georgiou coached Mt Eliza Football Club (Victoria) in 2007 and 2008.

He was then appointed Sandringham's assistant coach in 2011 and went back to the Mount Eliza Redlegs in 2014.

In 2004, Georgiou was named in the Greek Team of the Century.
