Originally from Christian Brothers College and the Salisbury Football Club, Tommy Gibbons was regarded as one of the club's best players in the six seasons he was at Norwood.

He played a significant part in Norwood winning the 1904 Grand Final. Down by 35 points at three quarter time, Norwood staged a remarkable comeback against Port Adelaide culminating in Gibbons having a set shot on goal with moments remaining in the game. The resultant goal from the boundary gave Norwood an amazing four point win.

1907 was to be a great season for Gibbons. He was an important player in the South Australian side that beat Victoria in Melbourne by one point. Gibbons was then one of Norwood's best players in the 1907 Grand Final win over Port Adelaide and in the team that beat Carlton for the Champions of Australia title at the end of the season.

The following year he was a member of the Norwood team that toured New South Wales and won all three games on the Sydney Cricket Ground against the home state.

Gibbons was also an A Grade cricketer and state lawn bowler.
