Ian "Buster" Gordon played his early football for the Golden Point Football Club, which competed in the Ballarat Football League. He was recruited by St Kilda in 1956 and played his solitary VFL game the following season, against Footscray on the Western Oval.

Gordon then had a short stint with Port Melbourne in 1958. He returned to Golden Point in 1959 and won that year's Henderson Medal for the best and fairest footballer in the Ballarat League.

Gordon moved to Norwood in 1960 with big expectations. Under coach Alan Killigrew he was joined by other former St. Kilda players George Dellar, Geoff Feehan, and Phil Stephens.

A good ground player with an excellent kick, he played mainly as a half back flanker or stay at home type centre-man. He was a strong footballer who was not afraid to use his body.

Together with Stephens he made his senior debut for Norwood in round 3 against North Adelaide at the Parade. Gordon was named in the centre, replacing the injured Peter Koerner. Norwood ran out eventual winners : 11.11 - 9.18.

He was again named in the centre against North Adelaide in the 1960 Grand Final on the Adelaide Oval. Unfortunately, in what turned out to be Gordon's last game for the club, Norwood lost a nail-biter : 14.11 (95) to 13.12 (90).
