Walter Griffiths transferred from the West Broken Hill Football Club to Norwood in 1927. In the previous season, Griffiths had won the Best and Fairest award at West Broken Hill and was selected to represent Broken Hill against South Australia on the Adelaide Oval.

He made his League debut for Norwood as a half back flanker in Round 1, against Glenelg. A reliable defender, he played most of the season in the League team and received a "Services Rendered" award for his efforts during the year.

After playing 15 League games in his first season, and a handful the following year, Griffiths played exclusively in Norwood's B Grade.

In 1928, he represented the South Australian B Grade Association against Warracknabeal (Victoria), on the Warracknabeal Oval when he was selected at centre half back. He was named the Norwood B Team's best and fairest for season 1928.

The following season he won the B Grade Magarey Medal, playing predominantly at centre half back. Griffiths captained the side to premierships in 1929 and 1930, and was runner-up for the B Grade Magarey Medal in 1930 and 1931.

By the time he left Norwood to join Glenelg in 1932, Griffiths had played in almost every position on the ground. He went on to record six games for Glenelg.

In 1939, Griffiths was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Norwood B Grade, and delegate to the SA Football Association.

It proved to be the beginning of many years of serving the club off the field, as Griffiths was elected to various roles on the Management Committee between 1939 and 1958.
