Gordon Headon had already played for Sturt, West Adelaide and Perth before he joined the Norwood Football Club. One of five brothers to have represented Sturt, Headon made 29 League appearances between 1931 and 1934. He was named in the centre in the team that defeated North Adelaide in the 1932 premiership decider.

In 1935 he transferred to West Adelaide, adding another 17 League games. The following season he moved to Western Australia and played 14 games for Perth.

Returning to South Australia in 1937, he was initially refused a clearance to Norwood by Perth, although West Adelaide (his last South Australian club) was happy to release him. He was eventually cleared in time for the match against West Torrens in round 2 and played 14 games in his first year for Norwood.

In 1939, Headon was appointed captain-coach of Norwood's Reserves. Unfortunately, a serious knee injury early in the year ended his playing season. Handing the captaincy over to Harold Page in July, Headon continued as coach and guided the team to the 1939 flag - Norwood thus becoming the first club to win three Reserves premierships in a row.
