Martin Heppell was educated at Carey Grammar in Melbourne and began his senior career with the St. Kilda Football Club, playing three AFL games during 1993 and 1994.

Melbourne then selected Heppell in the 1995 pre-season draft and he played two League games for the Demons that year. However he was then delisted and transferred across to Norwood for the 1996 season.

The highly talented and hard-working on-baller showed outstanding pre-season form, but unfortunately suffered a serious knee injury in the first game of the year against Central District at Football Park.

Almost 14 months later, after a major knee reconstruction, he was able to fight his way back into the powerful 1997 Norwood side. He lined-up against Glenelg at The Parade, for his return match.

The following season, Heppell played in the Norwood Reserves Grand Final victory against Port Adelaide - Norwood winning 11.14 to 8.13. Selected as a wingman, Heppell was named in the best players, and shared the win with his younger brother Malcolm (5 NFC League games, 1998).
