Originally from Pyramid Hill in Victoria, Steven Hoffman played for South Melbourne (149 games, 1968-78) and then joined Footscray (11 games, 1979).

Quick and tenacious, he began his VFL career with South Melbourne, playing as a centreman/wingman. However, after the legendary Bob Skilton retired, Hoffman took over the mantle as the Swans' number one rover.

After eleven years with South Melbourne, Hoffman had a season at Footscray. He played his 150th game in his first appearance for his new club. At the end of the year, Hoffman retired from the VFL, and joined Norwood in the SANFL.

He provided much needed experience to a Norwood side that had lost several key players from the 1979 season and had just appointed rookie coach Neil Balme as Bob Hammond's replacement. However, ongoing injuries eventually took their toll and Hoffman only managed 27 League games in his three seasons at the Parade.

After playing 18 senior games in 1980, he made nine appearances in 1981, and none in 1982.
