Life was looking good for Captain Ian Holdsworth as World War II ground to a halt in 1945.  He married Yvonne Thwaites, of Toorak Gardens, at the Gartrell Memorial Methodist Church on 20 January and was discharged from the Australian Army on 26 September after more than five years' honourable service.

He had every reason to look forward to happy times.  Instead, tragedy struck with the death of his wife in childbirth on 28 May 1946.  The elder daughter of Mr and Mrs N. R. Thwaites, Yvonne was only 24 - but her baby survived and carried on her mother's name.

Ian was born at Broken Hill on 23 May 1919, the younger son of Mr and Mrs S. T. Holdsworth.  He was living in St Kilda, Victoria, when he enlisted in the Australian Signals Corps at Caulfield on 10 June 1940.

Before the start of the 1947 season he had a run with Sturt before turning out with Norwood.  He played 16 reserves games for Norwood in 1947 and 1948.  He was playing at centre half-back for the reserves when he was called up for his lone league game as 20th man against South Adelaide in September 1947
