From Warrnambool in Victoria, Ron Hoy was signed by the Redlegs in 1952 after he moved to South Australia and started living and working in the Norwood district. He had impressed in the pre-season trials and was rated highly by the Norwood coach Jack Oatey.

He made his League debut in round three, after completing the residential qualification period. Hoy was named second rover to Jack Oatey, and the Redlegs thumped South Adelaide 20.33 to 9.7.

A clever ground player, quick and with a long, accurate kick, he seemed destined to become a Norwood regular for many seasons. Sadly however, after only five games, he was forced to return home due to a family illness.

Hoy went on to star for South Warrnambool in the Hampden Football League and was named the League's best and fairest player on three occasions.

In 1955 he had a short stint with Hawthorn in the VFL, playing one League match.
