Gavin Hughes joined Norwood after playing his junior football with the Modbury Football Club in the North Eastern Metro Junior Football Association (NEMJFA).

He played his first Reserve game for Norwood in 2004, and made his League debut the following season. The speedy wingman with a penetrating kick was selected to play State football in 2006 but was a late withdrawal after feeling ill on the morning of the match.

Hughes was drafted as a rookie by the Western Bulldogs at the end of 2006. He returned to Adelaide early in 2008 for personal reasons, without having played a senior game at AFL level.

Hughes recommenced his career at the Parade in 2009. Unfortunately he was hampered by injury and illness which restricted his League appearances. He was named on a wing in the 2010 side that was narrowly defeated by Central District in the Grand Final.

Continuing to pursue his bid for a premiership, Hughes was named as one of the emergencies in the 2012 Grand Final. After recovering from a knee injury, he had been unsuccessful in his bid to regain his spot in the League team.

Hughes became an important part of Norwood's defence in 2014. Despite another injury riddled season when he was only able to add another 10 games to his career total, he finally realised his goal to play in a winning Grand Final for the Redlegs. Norwood defeated arch-rivals Port Adelaide by four points, in a classic encounter on the Adelaide Oval.

That was to be Hughes' last game for the club, as he announced his retirement from League football soon after.

In 2015, he was appointed as a playing Assistant Coach of Prince Alfred Old Collegians (South Australian Amateur Football League, Division 2)
