Dr. William R James joined Norwood in 1929, after an impressive season playing for University in the amateur league. During the 1928 season he had kicked 124 goals for the University "Blacks" in A1's, and had been a member of the state amateurs.

An accurate kick, he was seen as a promising full forward for Norwood's league team.

James booted seven majors in Norwood's last internal trial the week before the 1929 season opener.

He made his league debut in round one against South Adelaide, was named at full forward, and kicked a goal in Norwood's win. His performance was hampered by a fractured nose sustained early in the match.

James was again named at full forward the following week, and kicked two goals. He was adjudged to have had a better match all-round, and the Redlegs won their away clash against North Adelaide. This was to be James' last game for the powerful Norwood league side that went on to win the 1929 premiership
