Remembered as a tough, close-checking defender, Brenton Klaebe progressed through Norwood's under-aged sides, playing in all of the club's junior grades on his way to League football. He was a member of Norwood's Under 17 premiership teams in 1983 and 1984. The following season Klaebe was outstanding for the Redlegs in the Under 19 Grand Final - Norwood defeating Port Adelaide 35.10 to 17.9.

Aggressive and uncompromising, Klaebe made his League debut against North Adelaide at Prospect Oval in Round 9, 1986. Norwood won the match 14.16 to 7.15. He played another eight senior games in 1986 and was an important player in the Norwood team that thrashed Woodville by 81 points in the Reserves Grand Final later that year.

Klaebe made 23 senior appearances in 1988 and won the club's most improved player award. Following an impressive season, the Fitzroy Football Club selected him at pick number 31 in the end of year VFL Draft.

After missing most of the 1989 season with injury however, he returned to the Norwood League team in 1990 and reached his 50 game milestone.

Klaebe moved to Melbourne, and played five games for Fitzroy in 1991.

Unfortunately, persistent back and knee injuries finally took their toll and after returning to the Parade in 1992, Klaebe played his last senior game for the Redlegs in a 1993 pre-season Foundation Cup game against Port Adelaide.

He then moved to the Kilburn Football Club in the South Australian Amateur Football League, playing in the 1993 Div 1 Grand Final, as well as representing his State.
