Playing at centre half forward, Leon Lambert won the best forward award for the senior colts, in 1950. He was also the team's vice-captain. Lambert made his League debut the following season, playing as a half forward flanker, and was named the League team's best forward for 1951.

He was moved to centre half back for the start of the 1952 season and performed creditably. Lambert was tried in the key defensive position after brilliant displays there the previous season for South Australia, in the interstate tramways carnival.

While he was not regarded as a tight checking defender, he was nonetheless reliable. A fine mark, and determined ground player, he used long drop kicks to clear his area.

He was a member of the 1952 Grand Final team that played against North Adelaide.

His start to the 1953 season was delayed due to a cricket related back injury. Later in that year, he was named as 20th man for Norwood's League game against North Adelaide, on the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Early in 1954, Lambert was injured in a pre-season trial. Coming back through the Reserves, he then severely injured his knee. His cartilage had to be removed and he was subsequently ruled out for the rest of the season, and did not play for Norwood again.
