Originally from the Victorian town of Nyah in the Swan Hill League, Peter Laughlin moved to Richmond in 1975 and started in the Under 19's.

Although he played some of his early football at full back, he made his League debut as a full forward, kicking six goals against St Kilda in 1977. Later that season he played in a winning Reserves Premiership for the Tigers.

After 25 League matches between 1977 and 1980 the highly skilled utility moved to Adelaide in the middle of the 1981 season. He had been approached by ex-Richmond team-mate and Norwood coach Neil Balme before the start of the season, but did not make the move until late June.

Laughlin impressed Norwood supporters in his SANFL League debut against West Torrens, and was rated best on ground against Woodville the following week.

While he started his career for Norwood as a half-forward, his versatility allowed him to play in numerous positions. He was named at full forward (changing with Michael Aish) in the 1984 history making Premiership team.

A polished, hard-working footballer, he also represented the State against Western Australia in Perth, in 1982.
