John Lill is the son of Norwood Hall of Fame inductee Alick Lill and was educated at Rose Park Primary School and later Prince Alfred College.

Remembered mainly as a centre half forward, he played in the 1960 and 1961 losing grand finals against North Adelaide and West Adelaide respectively.

Lill was named Norwood's Best Team Man in 1960, and topped the club's goal-kicking in 1961 and 1962.

He only missed one game through injury or illness and unfortunately for Lill that happened to be a State game against Victoria.

A fine cricketer, Lill played 64 first class matches for South Australia between 1955 and 1966, scoring over 4,000 runs. He was named South Australian Cricketer of the Year on two occasions.

After retiring as a player, he turned to administration. Between 1983 and 2000 he served as Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the Melbourne Cricket Club.
