Arthur Longden transferred to Norwood in 1881, having already impressed in his previous three seasons with the Melbourne Football Club.

He had an excellent South Australian debut season, playing solidly in defence, and being an important member of the Norwood premiership side.

In 1882, it was more of the same for Longden, as he again showed good form in another Norwood premiership year. Longden also toured Victoria with the Norwood team during the season. The side played matches against Ballarat, Carlton, Melbourne, Sandhurst and South Melbourne.

1883 was a memorable season for Longden. He made it three premierships in a row, and was selected in the Norwood side which played Essendon on the Kensington Oval. The mid-season clash drew much interest, as both clubs had been premiers of their respective associations the previous year.
Norwood won the contest 5.5 to 1.6, thus becoming the first South Australian team to defeat a touring Victorian club and Longden was again a reliable defender.
