Gary "Spog" Maddison won Norwood's Under 19's Best and Fairest award in 1976, before he made his League debut in Round 2 of the following season; Norwood recording a thumping win against Port Adelaide 22.17 to 9.13.

He played seven games in his debut season, predominantly as a half-forward.

In 1978, playing as a ruck-rover/half forward, he won the Reserves' Best and Fairest trophy and was a key player in the team's premiership year.

While he played another six League games in the club's centenary year, he was not quite able to gain a regular spot in the powerful League line-up.

Maddison moved to Queensland the following season, joining Wilston-Grange and later Mayne Football Clubs. He was lured north by former Norwood star Mike Poulter, who was captain-coach of Wilston-Grange at the time.

The classy mid-fielder went on to have an outstanding career in Queensland's premier competition. Capable of playing in most positions, Maddison was an automatic selection for the Queensland State sides of the 1980's, representing the Maroons on 19 occasions.

Serious knee injuries cut his career short. However, by that time he had already done enough to be later included in Mayne's Team of the Century, and to be inducted in the Queensland AFL Hall of Fame.

Gary's brother Geoff, played Reserves for Norwood in the 1970's.
