Harold Walter Main was educated at Rose Park Public School and then Norwood High School. He was recruited from the Kenilworth Football Club (Amateur League) and included in Norwood's senior 25 man squad in April 1927. At the time he was seen as a back-up for the injured Roy Bent, who was in doubt for the start of the 1927 season.

A key player for his Amateur club, Main had been used across the half back line, although he had played his junior football in the centre. He was named Kenilworth's "Most Consistent" player four years in succession.

Main had been impressive as a forward in Norwood's pre-season trials however. Although slightly built, he had the ability to read the game, and was a good high mark and accurate kick for goal.

After debuting for the Redlegs in 1927, Main finished the season back at Kenilworth.

He returned to Norwood the following year and played his last League game against Sturt in round three 1928

A talented sportsman, Main played several years of A Grade district cricket for the Adelaide Cricket Club.
