Damien Mellow first played football for Dernancourt Under 9's. In 1990, whilst studying at Campbelltown High School, "Coco" Mellow progressed through the grades at Norwood, playing in the Under 17's, Under 19's and the Reserves. He had been impressive whilst representing South Australia in the Teal Cup competition.

Speedy, with a strong, penetrating kick, Damien Mellow was selected in the inaugural 1991 Adelaide Crows 52 man squad.

He played five games for the Redlegs in the 1991 Foundation Cup series. His senior debut was against Central District in Round 1 of the pre-season competition and he was also in the side which later lost to South Adelaide in the competition Grand Final.

Mellow was then selected by the Sydney Swans in the 1992 Pre-season Draft.

Quite tall for a wingman, hard-working and versatile, Mellow seemed destined for a long career at League level. However, he spent most of 1993 in Norwood's Reserves.

The following year Mellow played for Kilburn in the South Australian Amateur Football League, representing his State in the 1994 Australian Amateurs National Carnival held in Victoria.

In 1996 he played 12 senior games for South Adelaide.

Mellow then moved to the Port Football Club (Spencer Gulf Football League) in 1997. He was a prominent footballer for Ports, playing in four premierships, and later also coaching the club.
