William "Wally" Monkhouse joined Norwood in 1950 from the Boulder City Football Club in the Goldfields Football League in Western Australia, having transferred from Ashburton the previous season. Former Norwood star Neville Way (1944-1950, 73 NFC games) had also played for Boulder City before joining the Redlegs.

Monkhouse had been living in the Norwood district since December 1949. The ruckman/forward had come highly recommended, and a clearance was arranged after he impressed in pre-season training.

He did not make his league debut until late in the 1950 season.  Despite playing four games, including the last minor round game against Glenelg, Monkhouse was not selected for the major round series and missed out on playing in Norwood's Grand Final win against Glenelg.

He was in the Norwood team that travelled to Mt.Gambier to play the South-East and Border Football League, the week after the 1950 SANFL decider.

The following season he appeared in Norwood's pre-season trials.

In 1952, Victorian Football Association clubs Camberwell and Prahran showed interest in the big man. Monkhouse had previously played with Oakleigh Reserves in the VFA, having transferred from the Eastern Suburbs League in 1947.

At the beginning of the 1952 season he was added to Oakleigh's supplementary list.
