Lyall Mutton began his league career with Glenelg in 1922. He transferred to Norwood early in the 1923 season and so began an illustrious career.

It was a career that included 3 premierships, state representation (including the 1924 Australian Carnival in Hobart), 134 games, 226 goals ( being club leading goalkicker in 1929).

Reports from his playing days reveal a player possessing skills that would have made him outstanding in any era.

Mutton was a brilliant half forward. Against West Adelaide in 1924 he was described as, “a scintillating figure in the Redlegs forward division,” having kicked 8 of his side’s 12 goals in their win.

Later that same season against South Adelaide The Advertiser report included: “This was Mutton’s fifth goal and his dodging of 3 opponents to kick it was one of the cleverest things of the day.”

As well as being fast and elusive, there are also reports of him taking exceptional high marks, of his accuracy from set shots and his ability to snap goals from difficult angles.

Mutton was an outstanding footballer in one of Norwood’s greatest eras. He was duly rewarded with Life Membership.
