Dennis McAvaney had played 17 games for South Adelaide, between 1952 and1955, before he was cleared to Norwood in 1956.
 
After moving to Norwood he played one League match in 1956, two in 1957, and three in 1958.
 
At 6ft (182cm) tall, he was used mainly as a centre half forward or a full back. He started at full back for Norwood Reserves in Round 1, 1956.
 
Whilst McAvaney struggled to hold down a permanent spot in the Norwood League side, he was a fine performer in the Reserves. He was named Most effective and consistent in 1957, Most Consistent in 1958, and Best Team Man in 1959.
 
In 1958, he represented South Australia's Reserves against the Victorian Football League Reserves, and was ranked high in his team's best players. Again at full back, he played well in Norwood Reserves' Grand Final loss to Port Adelaide, later that season.
 
McAvaney was vice-captain of Norwood Reserves in 1958 and 1959. and played a total of 116 Reserve games includin 53 with South Adelaide.
