Before George McNeilage came to South Australia he played six games for Geelong and Melbourne in the VFL. He played for Norwood in 1912 and 1913 as a ruck-follower resting in the forward pocket.
In 1915 George enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) and by 1916 was in action in Egypt and as a bombardier in France. He was poisoned by gas at Ypres in September 1917 and returned to Australia with a heart condition in March 1918
