Alick Murray was one of 14 new men tried by Norwood in its first match of the 1896 season, against up-and-coming North Adelaide, his old team, at Adelaide Oval.

'Goalpost' in The Evening Journal did not think much of most of the Norwood recruits and declared that Murray "is not class enough for the reds".  Alick nevertheless did kick a goal as Norwood downed his former love 11.7 to 5.5, mainly on the strength of a five-goal bag by 'Boots' Stuart - and even he, according to 'Goalpost', "will have to learn not to run so much".

Alick kicked another goal the following week as Norwood demolished the lowly Natives 6.12 to one point at Kensington Oval.  On 4 July he helped Norwood thump Port 10.10 to 2.4 at Adelaide Oval, but at the same ground a week later was a member of the team which lost 6.5 to 4.3 as South Adelaide surged towards the premiership.. His hopes of a productive career at Norwood would not be fulfilled.

Born at Port Adelaide on 17 July 1868 to Joseph Robert Murray and his wife Caroline Ann, née Mase, Alick played 18 games for North in three seasons - 1888 and 1993-95.  He died in 1953
