Powerfully built at 197cm and 95kg, Bill Nalder played mainly as a ruckman, and occasionally as a full forward.

Originally from Lalbert in Victoria, Nalder joined Richmond in 1971. The Tigers already had an array of talented ruckmen including Neil Balme,  Michael Green, Craig McKellar and Brian Roberts and Nalder consequently struggled to cement a spot in the League team.

After playing 14 League games in 1972 and 1973, and being an important member of Richmond's 1971 and 1973 Reserves Premierships, he was leased to Preston in the Victorian Football Association. Nalder then joined Norwood in 1975.

Unfortunately he had missed the pre-season, and subsequently started in the Reserves. He made his SANFL debut against North Adelaide at the Parade. It turned out to be a high scoring affair, with the Redlegs the eventual winners 26.22 to 24.12. Again he was not quite able to gain a regular spot in the League team, but played in two Norwood Reserves flags in 1975 and 1976.

Bill Nalder moved to Central Districts in 1977 where he added another 40 games over the next two seasons.
