Michael "Juice" Newton was originally from Whorouly (north-eastern Victoria) in the Ovens and King Football League. He played in the TAC Cup for the Murray Bushrangers and was picked up by the Melbourne Football Club in the 2004 AFL National Draft at selection 43.

Newton then played for Sandringham, Melbourne's affiliated club in the VFL. He did not make his AFL debut for the Demons until Round 13, 2007. He took the AFL's Mark of the Year in his debut season.

After playing 28 senior games between  2007 and 2011, Newton was delisted by Melbourne and moved to Norwood for the 2012 season.

A strong, high leaping key-forward, Newton was also quick for his size and had a powerful kick.

Newton made his senior debut for the Redlegs in the club's first game of 2012 when Norwood defeated Central District 9.12 to 7.4. He played eight games, before a damaged ACL and subsequent knee reconstruction kept him out for the rest of the year

Although he only managed to make two appearances in 2013, he had an outstanding 2014 season. Newton played 20 games, led the goal-kicking with 57 goals and was an important part of the Norwood premiership team.

Newton played another nine games in 2015, before returning home to Victoria and joining the Wangaratta Magpies in the Ovens and Murray Football League.
