During the 1974 season, Greg Nicholson along with Rodney Pope transferred to Norwood from West Adelaide. Nicholson had come to Adelaide in 1971 after moving from VFA club Frankston.

A creative rover with good disposal, he won West Adelaide's Best and Fairest award in 1972. However, after 57 games for West, he was recruited by Norwood to bolster its on-ball brigade.

Nicholson started his Norwood career as a rover and quickly became an important member of the team.A courageous and consistent performer, he played in Norwood's 1975 drought-breaking premiership team, and was also high in Norwood's best players when the Redlegs defeated Sturt by 1 point in the 1978 Grand Final.

In 1978 he started to play in the back pocket and his football arguably went to another level; he not only excelled in that position in the Redlegs' 78 triumph, but was again impressive when he represented the State the following year.

Nicholson played his 200th SANFL game in the 1981 Preliminary Final, and retired after Norwood's 1983 Preliminary Final loss to Sturt.
