Bob O'Loughlin commenced his football career with Norwood in the Colts of 1942. Over the following two seasons, during the Wartime competition, he played in the Norwood-North C team. He was named as a Reserve for the Norwood-North League side, several times in 1944.
 
He made his League debut in 1945, playing 13 games in his first season. Predominantly a defender, playing mainly as a back-pocket or half-back flanker, he was adjudged the most improved junior in 1945.
 
O'Loughlin was named the Reserves' Best Team Man in 1946, Best All Round Player in 1947, and Most Consistent in 1948.
 
After 30 League games, and almost 50 games in the Reserves, he was awarded a player's Five Year certificate, in 1949.
