David Payne was educated at Gilles Plains High School and recruited by Norwood from the Walkerville Football Club. He progressed through Norwood's Under 17's and Under 19's, winning premierships in both grades.

"Payney" made his league debut against Glenelg, in Round 9 of the 1984 season. Named on a half forward flank in the 1984 Grand Final, the 19 year-old was a valuable member of Norwood's "History-Makers" team - the Redlegs coming from fifth spot to win the flag.

A regular in the senior side for 10 seasons, firstly under coach Neil Balme and later Neil Craig, the rover/half
forward/wingman was particularly dangerous around goals and was the club's leading goalkicker in 1991.

Ongoing back problems forced Payne to retire from league football in 1993. However, he was recognised for his services and was awarded Life Membership of the Norwood Football Club.

After retiring from league football, he played for the Pooraka Football Club in the South Australian Amateur Football League. Turning his hand to coaching, he also guided that club to a Division 2 premiership.
