Stephen Pettit was a very promising junior who played 19 games for Norwood's Under 17's in 1984. Not only did the side win that year's flag, but it went through the season undefeated. He added another 16 games the following season; the Under 17's were beaten in the Grand Final.

Progressing to the Under 19's in 1986, Pettit played 18 out of a possible 22 games and was again part of a Premiership side which went through the season undefeated.

In 1987 he played 13 Reserve games, and added another 11 the following season.

Pettit made his senior debut for the Redlegs against Woodville in the opening round of the 1988 Escort Cup series. He was most impressive in his 11 League appearances that season.

Unfortunately, the young wingman's career was then cut short by rheumatoid arthritis, a disease that
affected both both his knees, and as a result, was not able to play for the Redlegs again.
