A reliable key defender, Jim Pile first played Seconds (Reserves) football for Norwood in 1966. Pile had a solid season, and the Redlegs eventually took out the 1966 Reserves premiership.

He played his one game of League football in round four, 1969. A game made infamous by the Neil Kerley (Glenelg) and Damien Nygaard incident, and Norwood were beaten 25.17 to 17.12. In what was a dark day for the club, Nygaard's jaw was broken in the clash with Kerley and Pile also succumbed to injury and had to be replaced in the third term because of a shoulder injury.

Pile was named at centre half back in the 1969 Reserves Grand Final. He was high in Norwood's best players, as the Redlegs defeated Port Adelaide by 25 points, on the Adelaide Oval.
