In 1957 John Potter began his career at Norwood at underage level. He made his league debut in round 3, 1959, and played his second and final league game two weeks later.
Potter also played 12 games for the reserves in 1959, and was named as an emergency in the 1960 Reserves Grand Final team, which won the premiership by defeating Port Adelaide 9.7 to 8.5.

Potter is probably best remembered for his work off the field.

He coached the Norwood Under 17 team during 1974-76.

At the Annual General Meeting of the Norwood Football Club in December 1993, Potter was elected to the Football Club Committee, replacing the retiring member David Parkinson. He also assumed the role of Chairman of the Oval Committee.

Potter was involved in several sub-committees, but his service to the club was occasionally interrupted by interstate transfers with his employment as a senior executive with AMP. During one of his appointments in Adelaide, John served as State Manager of AMP.

In June 1994, he was appointed project manager of the Norwood and Sturt joint bid for the second AFL licence in South Australia, submitted in the report "The Logical Option".

Potter served as a Norwood FC board/committee member from 1994 to 2002.

In 1998, Potter was made a Life Member of the Norwood Football Club
