Denis Potts was born on 26 February 1929 and commenced his playing career at Norwood Districts High School where he played alongside future Norwood team mates Neil Dansie and Pat Hall.

He then went to play with the Norwood Junior Colts before becoming captain of the Senior Colts. He was appointed vice captain of the State Senior Colts under the captaincy of West Adelaide's Ken McGregor.

He was selected in the league team as a 19 year old and played in the 1948 premiership team. A wingman and half forward flanker, he was known for his pace and high marking.

Potts played eight league games in his first season after making his debut in round 10, against Port Adelaide - Norwood winning the match 15.10 to 11.12. He was also elected vice-captain of the Reserves in 1948.

In 1949 he added 13 games to his career total, and was named the team's best all-round player. He then played seven games in 1951 and 13 in 1952.

Potts played 11 games for Glenelg in 1954
