Ashley Reade was originally from the Mt. Eliza Football Club (Redlegs), in the Mornington Peninsula south of Melbourne. He then had stints at St. Kilda and Melbourne and was runner up in the 1994 Melbourne Reserves best and fairest award.

Quick, athletic and a strong mark, he had played mainly across the half-forward line, before moving to the Parade in 1995. After also starting his senior football with Norwood as a half forward, he was dropped to the Reserves after a few games. Reade had a strong second half of the 1995 season however, kicking 34 goals in the last ten games - including a 8 goal haul against Sturt.

When Anthony Pierri and Chris Prime left Norwood the following season, Reade became the regular full forward for the 1996 League side. He kicked 65 goals for the year and his good form gained him State selection in the match against Western Australia in Perth.

He kicked three goals in Norwood's preliminary final loss to Port Adelaide, but that proved to be his last match for the club, as he left for overseas soon after.

Reade later played for Balmain in the New South Wales Football League. He was named on a half forward flank, in Balmain's Team of the Century; another former Norwood footballer, Greg Schlein, was selected at full forward.
