After finishing school at Sacred Heart College in 1963, Peter Redden captain-coached his home team Geranium into the 1964 Grand Final at the tender age of 18. In the same season he also won The Mail Medal for the best and fairest player in the competition.
 
Redden joined Norwood in 1965 and made his League debut against Woodville in Round 1. Playing at full back, he was very high in Norwood's best players.He played his first season at full back and centre half back, taking over the key defensive position when legendary Ron Kneebone was moved to centre half forward.
 
Redden would train with Norwood on Tuesday nights, then return on a Friday night for the Saturday game.
 
He was named the Sunday Mail's best first year player in 1965. His good form continued in 1966 when he won the club's best backman award.
 
Peter Redden later served in the Vietnam War.
