Peter Roberts was educated at Campbelltown Primary/ High Schools. In 1971 he was runner-up in the Under 17's best and fairest award, and in 1972 progressed to the Under 19's in its premiership winning season.
 
He was a State Under 19 representative and played his first Reserves game in 1973. Roberts added another 18 games the following season, helping the Reserves win the flag.

A ruckman/forward, he was noted for his high marking.
 
He made his League debut in Round 9, 1974, and played six senior games for the season.

In 1975 he appeared 13 times in the League team and, after returning to the side in the second to last minor round game, he was selected for the second Semi-Final against Glenelg and the Preliminary Final against Port Adelaide. He was omitted from the League Grand Final side but played in the 1975 Reserves premiership; the Redlegs defeating Sturt 16.20 to 7.6 in the Grand Final.
 
He was named at centre-half back in the Redlegs 1976 Reserves Grand Final victory over North Adelaide: 23.9 to 13.11. 
 
Roberts transferred to West Torrens during the 1977 season, and played another 43 games for the Eagles (1977 - 1981)   
 
A left arm pace bowler, Roberts also played A Grade cricket for East Torrens.
